Purpose
APALA’s Scholarships & Awards Committee is excited to announce the JCLC 2022 Travel Grant Application! The goals of the award are to:
- Provide APALA members the opportunity to network and gain professional development through participation in the JCLC conference through financial assistance
- Encourage sustaining APALA membership and organizational participation through the opportunity to attend national convenings of Black, Indigenous and other people of color working in the information field
APALA’s JCLC 2022 Travel Grant will provide four APALA member’s with up to $1,000 each in funding to attend the 2022 Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC). Travel grant funds are not restricted and may be used by the recipient for any personal expense incurred to attend JCLC (registration, travel, lodging, meals, etc.) as long as appropriate receipts are provided. JCLC is scheduled to take place from October 5-9th, 2022 at the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida..
As stated on the JCLC conference website, “JCLC brings together a diverse group of librarians, library staff, library supporters, and community participants to explore issues of diversity in libraries and how they affect the ethnic communities who use our services. JCLC is a unique and unparalleled opportunity for participants to share successes, opportunities, and challenges while networking and attending cutting-edge programs on pressing issues affecting both librarians and communities of color. The conference includes speakers, skills building workshops, research based panels, networking opportunities and exhibits. In addition, JCLC deepens connections across constituencies and beyond, and unifies and strengthens the voices of each association.”

Eligibility
- Applicant must be a current APALA member.
- Students or employees, with or without an MLS or equivalent degree, working in libraries, archives or other information organizations, are eligible to apply.
- Recipient will provide a short conference report reflecting on their experience for the APALA website or Newsletter.
Criteria for Selection
Award applications will be evaluated by members of the APALA Scholarship & Awards Committee. Criteria for selection includes:
- Completing each component of the online application
- Meets the above eligibility criteria
- Applicants who are attending JCLC for the first time and/or are not receiving additional funding for conference attendance will be prioritized
- Strength and clarity of the applicant’s personal statement (500 words or less)

Complete the JCLC 2022 Travel Grant Application by May 15th, 2022 at 11:59 PM PST.
Selection Procedure and Timeline
- Applications Due: May 15th, 2022
- Applicants Notified of Final Decision: June 15th, 2022
- Recipient Announced: July 15th, 2022
- Travel Grant check distributed to recipient via mail or at JCLC 2022 (Oct 5-9th, 2022)
- Recipient’s Conference Report Due: October 20, 2022
Administrative Procedures
- The APALA JCLC 2022 Travel Grant shall be administered under the By-Laws of APALA.
- In the event that no applicants satisfy the criteria, no travel award will be given, with the option to grant an additional award the following year.
- In the event that fewer than four applicants satisfy the criteria, the award money will be split evenly amongst the applicants who have been selected to receive award funding.
- An APALA member who receives any APALA grant/award may not receive another grant/award in the same year.
