In fall 2024, the University of Illinois hosted a number of youth literature-related events. On September 6, APALA member Dr. Sarah Park Dahlen hosted an in-person book launch of her award-winning co-edited (Ebony Elizabeth Thomas) anthology, Harry Potter and the Other: Race, Justice, and Difference in the Wizarding World. The week of September 16, Paula Yoo visited the campus to talk about her book, Rising from the Ashes: Los Angeles, 1992. Edward Jae Song Lee, Latasha Harlins, Rodney King, and a City on Fire. The Department of Asian American Studies, the Asian American Cultural Center, and the School of Information Sciences Center for Children’s Books co-hosted Yoo’s visit, which included a lunchtime Food for Thought, meeting with AACC interns, and an evening event co-hosted by Dr. Sarah Park Dahlen and Edith Campbell. This series of events was part of the Asian American Literature Festival, which also hosted an event with Debbi Michiko Florence in San Francisco. On October 3-5, the College of Education and University Library hosted the Youth Literature Festival, a longtime tradition making its first come back since Covid-19. Asian American authors Ellen Oh, Debbi Michiko Florence, Hannah Moushabeck, and Anna Lapera were invited to visit area schools on Thursday and Friday and to participate in Community Day, held Saturday October 5.
