Pushing the Margins: Women of Color and Intersectionality in LIS published
(Library Juice Press, 2018)
Edited by APALA Executive Board members Rose L. Chou and Annie Pho, this collection uses intersectionality as a framework to explore the experiences of women of color in library and information science (LIS). With roots in black feminism and critical race theory, intersectionality studies the ways in which multiple social and cultural identities impact individual experience. Libraries and archives idealistically portray themselves as egalitarian and neutral entities that provide information equally to everyone, yet these institutions often reflect and perpetuate societal racism, sexism, and additional forms of oppression. This book examines how lived experiences of social identities affect women of color and their work in LIS.
In addition to the overarching themes of racism, sexism, and feminism, repeating themes in the book include: emotional labor, invisible labor, microaggressions, self care, support networks and community, identity, and representation. APALA members Tarida Anantachai, Jennifer Brown, Clara M. Chu, Alyssa Jocson Porter, Alanna Aiko Moore, Lalitha Nataraj, Charlotte Roh, and Gayatri Singh all contributed chapters to the book.
JCLC 2018 took place in Albuquerque New Mexico September 26-30. Multiple APALA members served on the planning committee and volunteers. Many APALA members also led sessions, attended the conference, and contributed to making the conference welcoming and generative in countless ways!
