The APALA Scholarship and Awards Committee is honored to name Carol Ng-He as the 2025 recipient of the Gayatri Singh Award.
Gayatri Singh was a long-time APALA member, community builder, activist, and friend. Gayatri served on several APALA committees and was known for the way she welcomed each person as an individual with kindness and compassion.
The Gayatri Singh Award provides a $500 scholarship to one APALA member annually to participate in professional development engaging with equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice.
This year’s recipient is Carol Ng-He (she/her), the Associate Director of Boxer Library at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, Illinois. Previously, she served as Digital Collections Curator at the Center for the Art of East Asia and as School and Community Program Manager at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, both at the University of Chicago. She has also held the position of Exhibits Coordinator at Arlington Heights Memorial Library and has taught as an adjunct lecturer at Roosevelt University, Columbia College Chicago, and Oakton College.
Carol has held leadership roles on committees and interest groups in various professional associations, including the Chicago Area Archivists, the Art Libraries Society of North America, and the Visual Resources Association. She is a member of the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals. She currently serves on the editorial advisory board of Library Management. In 2020, the Chicago Area Archivists named Carol Member of the Year for her excellence in service to the community. Her publications on pedagogical practices in libraries, archives, museums, and higher education have appeared in books and journals. She is also a co-author of Exhibits and Displays: A Practical Guide for Librarians (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021).
Carol earned a Master of Arts in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Library and Information Science from San José State University. She also holds the Digital Archives Specialist Certificate through the Society of American Archivists.
